Trend Update: Fall 2011 - Color Blocking

Michelle Lynch, Fashion-Ade Style Director

There is nothing new about the trend of color blocking - except everything!  Lucky for you:  this flattering-for-everyone trend has come back this season with a vengeance!  And, this is one of my favorite trends to create; it's so easy to piece together separates (yes, the ones already in your virtual closet!!).

  • Just mix together cool jackets, sweaters and pants, each in a different shade of fall's exciting colors.

  • Consider mixing in bright blues and cool jades - colors of the moment.

This trend gives you the freedom to play around and mix colors.

  • Go ahead, put that emerald green turtleneck top with those short silver cigarette pants and add a great yellow overcoat.
  • Or how about a royal blue high-neck blouse with a long red skirt? Add a solid color boot and you're look is totally color blocked!

Now for me, color blocking is about taking a regular, monotone outfit and popping it with color.  For instance, You know black & white is always right, but

  • Add a red coat.
  • Pair it with a mustard yellow leather jacket
  • Add a great green scarf
  • Wear it with a pair of hot blue boots

Voila!  Apply any one of thes styling tips and you have color blocking at its finest.  Just take a look at what you have, pop the color and you're set!

Don't make this complicated - rather than embracing a whole new idea of what to put where, think more about sprucing up the muted.  This is a trend that's hard to mess up, just go for color, BOLD color!  Colors of Substance!  Add a pop of color to that plain-jane outfit you've been wearing forever.  Now is the time to revive, restore and recreate.. by stepping into the wonderful world of color blocking!
