Trend Update: Fall 2011 - Lace

Michelle Lynch, Fashion-Ade Style Director

I used to think lace was for girly girls.  It was, and it still is…  But now when you hear the word lace it is usually associated with chic.  Lace was big this past spring/summer season, and designers can’t seem to let go of this wonderful fabric, so neither should you!

Lace is taking on a new meaning this season, by becoming a little bit sturdier.  And it’s being paired with unlikely fabrics, like denim and leather/pleather. All-lace pieces, like tunics or dresses, have been seen on racks, and they’re flying out of the stores like hotcakes!

Layering lace has also been a hot trend this season.  You’ll see lots of “built in” camisoles in nude colors under brighter lace overlays. (Think about it:  If you’re wearing something lace, you usually need something under that lace or that peek-a-boo fabric can be too revealing).

And, while you’d think that lace has always had a classic feel, now you can definitely add romantic and bohemian to this versatile design.  I personally love the look of a vintage inspired lace cami with a denim skirt and cowboy boots, but that’s just me… and maybe something like this is already hanging in your closet, waiting to be reclaimed?

If you’re adding this look this fall, key pieces to consider:

  •  A full lace skirt
  • Dresses, made of lace, or in nude or pale colors with lace accents
  • Tiered lace tops matched with distressed jeans and a large tote (really cute!)

This season, you definitely will see a change in lace; this “vintage” fabric is back with a vengeance, and has a new edgy attitude to prove it.  Now is a great time to experiment with fall’s lace looks; you’ll find them in a myriad of styles and colors - so steam it up with a touch of lace, or go all the way with a full embodied statement.  Either way you can’t go wrong!
