Trend Update: Fall 2011 - Long & Lean

Michelle Lynch, Fashion-Ade Style Director

Getting the long and lean look for fall is not quite as simple as it sounds.  But, once you get the right formula, you will love this easy, breezy, comfortable trend.

Aside from hiding a broken leg, most of us tend to shy away from these long-on-long looks. But, I’m here to tell you:  This mix can really pack a punch and add a little drama to your wardrobe.  This look has gone in and out of style over the decades, and we last saw it in the punk grunge era.  Before that, it was all over the Disco era of the 70’s.

  • Remember those long dance-floor-skimming jumpsuits?
  • What about long duster jackets, or knee length furs?

It’s time to channel those proportions when you think about this look.

And speaking of proportions, remember when we talked about getting it right for boxy tees?  Well, the same rules apply here, but it does require a little more of an eye.  Here a few jumping off points:

  • If you opt for boxy or loose look, choose light and flowing fabrics. How about a light canvas skirt and sheer mid-thigh length tunic? Can you imagine how great these two fabrics will flow?
  • Want a more tailored look? I can see you in bright, flare pants, a print blouse with high collar (tucked in, of course) and a long denim duster jacket that hits anywhere from below the knee to the ankle.
  • Or, top a longer full skirt with a long cardigan in a silky texture – add a knee high wedge boot – one that reaches your hemline or higher - to make the look really Fall 2011.

See it’s not that hard!  Just be sure you take a little extra time on this look so you’ll be long on fashion all season long!
