Trend Update: Spring 2012 - Black & Blue Florals

Michelle Lynch, Fashion-Ade Style Director

Got the winter blues when it comes to your wardrobe? Channel those feelings right now and well into spring, by applying this soothing palate to the season's favorite floral patterns.

If you're like me, you might be getting kind of bored with your winter outfits. Much as I loved them last fall, my winter looks don't seem quite as exciting, and I'm starting to long for the carefree styling that comes with spring and summer.

And with Valentine's Day upon us, you might be feeling like you could go for something romantic, but you don't want to go over the top with red hearts-and-roses.

Well, this spring's runways delivered a wonderful solution, one that works now and will ease you right into spring. I'm talking about the fresh take on florals, in a very contemporary black-and-blue palette.

Let's face it – floral patterns are a staple for the spring year after year. But this year you'll find them rendered in a moody way. The deep hues of cobalt and electric blue were popular all winter, and this color trend is going to carry right into the spring with this fresh take. Place these darker hues on a white background and you have instant easy/breezy!

So, add this pattern in all kinds of ways:

  • Add a black-and-blue floral top with to your favorite pencil skirt – add black tights and boots now, and pair the top with high-waisted white pants in the spring (yes, this silhouette is still going to be with us) – a silver cuff completes both these looks.
  • Try a black and blue floral scarf with your black winter coat for a spring spruce up – and to bring even more attention to your face, add this season's must have jewelry, the earring.
  • You can even try a touch of black and blue floral at your feet – you'll find both flats and rubber rain boots in these pretty florals.
  • Feeling really adventurous? You can go head to toe with this pattern in a dress or top and skirt.  One way to do this:  keep the scale of the print really big - think just one huge cluster of blue flowers on a back backround.  (And just remember = if you're going bold, you probably can keep the rest of your ourfit understated).

To sum it up, don't let winter's blues get you down – take the plunge with black and blue floral and you'll get an instant pick me up.

Maybe this trend isn't for you?  Try another!
